A 69-year-old elevator repairman died Wednesday after he was trapped while fixing an elevator at Sts. Mary & Elizabeth Hospital.
William L. Motley, of the 7300 block of Chestnut Tree Lane, was pronounced dead about 8 p.m., said Jim Wesley, a deputy Jefferson County coroner. He died of multiple blunt force injuries and traumatic asphyxiation.
Wesley said Motley worked for the Schindler Elevator Co. and had been at the hospital working on an elevator for much of the day. He was on the ladder inside the shaft when he became pinned by one of the elevators, Wesley said.
Barbara Mackovic, a spokeswoman for Jewish Hospital & St. Mary’s Heathcare, called the incident a tragic accident and expressed the company’s sympathy goes out to Motley’s family.
Louisville Metro Police and OSHA are investigating the incident, Wesley said.
